Why Do Holistic Alcohol Treatment Programs Work So Well?

by Josh

In my experience, holistic alcohol treatment is the best approach to treating alcoholism.

Like most aspects of recovery, what works for some may not work for others.  But let me tell you why I think a holistic approach to recovery is the best long-term solution.

What Is Holistic Alcohol Treatment?

Holistic alcohol treatment is an approach/philosophy that involves healing every aspect of the alcoholic’s life.  While traditional treatments focus on the physical/psychological addiction, a holistic approach takes into account every facet of the alcoholic’s life.

Holistic treatment is not a short-term treatment, but rather, it’s a long-term approach to recovery that focuses on constantly striving for self-improvement.

Why does holistic treatment work so well?

When you examine the nature of alcoholism and addiction, the answer becomes clear – the reason holistic treatment has such as high success rate is that by its very nature, alcoholism goes beyond mere physical or psychological addiction.

Alcoholism is more than just a substance abuse problem that can damage the body, at its worst, it can be a life altering disease that wreaks havoc on every facet of the alcoholic’s life.  Areas that can be affected include:

  • Emotional well-being
  • Relationships
  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • Spiritual health
  • Career/Job
  • Finances

For the alcoholic, these negative effects can have a spiraling effect – the alcoholism causes terrible life consequences, which triggers anxiety and depression, which in turn saps away any motivation to change or quit.  Recovery from alcohol addiction needs to go beyond mere abstinence.  For successful treatment, the alcoholic has to be given tools to repair every aspect of their life.  For example, the addict must rebuild their physical health through nutrition and exercise, which will also contribute to their self-esteem.  The addict must not only make attempts to rebuild broken relationships, but to eliminate toxic ones as well, which will improve their mental and emotional well-being.

By simply following along the traditional path to recovery, you could risk missing out on many elements of holistic growth.  Simply addressing 1-2 facets, such as the physical addiction and spiritual growth, neglects the many other areas of the alcoholic’s life that requires healing.  These elements support each other, making you more resilient and less likely to relapse.

Recovery Through Holistic Growth

For someone seeking spiritual growth for example, hard exercise will not just benefit the body, but it can be a form of meditation as well, leading to more spiritual growth.  Hard exercise will also give the addict better physical fitness, which may lead to increased confidence and a boost in mental, emotional, and social well-being.

Removing negative people from your life not only reduces your chances of being in situations where you might relapse, it can also make your life more stable, bringing you happiness and emotional well-being.  It may also free you up to uncover new relationships that are worth pursuing.

The best part about holistic treatment its not just a short-term solution, it’s also a way to live a positive life. If you want successful long-term recovery, start looking beyond abstinence and start looking at ways you can improve your life.
